Description of Conference: Mali's liberal investment code and the huge potential of minerals have attracted over US$1 billion into the gold industry since the beginning of 1998. It is now Africa's third-largest gold producer after South Africa and Ghana even though its full mineral potential is yet to be revealed as the country is still under explored. Gold accounts for 8% of GDP, 70% of exports and 14% of government revenue. Mali has one of the world's largest sedimentary basins with similarities in geology to the proven petroleum provinces in Algeria, Chad and Sudan. Hydrocarbon exploitation is based on either concession agreement, or production sharing scheme that allows companies to rapidly recoup exploration and production costs. Mali has one of the most vibrant local private downstream sectors in sub-Saharan Africa. Its infrastructure – rail, road network, storage - is being constructed and upgraded to cope with an increased demand of imported petroleum products and boost its regional competitiveness. As a member of the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI), Mali endorses guiding principles that enhances its business friendly environment. Energy and mining sectors in Mali in particular, and in Africa in general, offer many exciting opportunities that will be presented in Bamako during the 13th Africa oil, gas and minerals conference and exhibition jointly organized by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and the government of Mali in cooperation with Cubic Globe Ltd, from 10 to 13 November 2009. This well established event follows the editions already held since 1996 in Zimbabwe, Cote d'Ivoire, Namibia, Ghana, Cameroon, Angola, Morocco, Mozambique, Algeria, Kenya and Equatorial Guinea.
