Description of Conference: Empire and English Studies: Pedagogy and Activism Now Since their inception, English departments in the former colonies have played an important role in disseminating culture and language of the British Empire. That English literature appeared as a subject in the curricula of the colonies long before it was institutionalized in England, and that the study of British culture and the English language had found a place in educational institutions of the colonies before they had made their way to the British universities, attest to the fact that English departments in British colonies have always remained closely connected to empire. One can also locate a number of sites of resistances emanating from the very departments established to educate people in the language of the empire. However, this conference wishes to re-engage with the idea of empire for an entirely different reason: to locate and conceptualize the imperialist practices in today’s globalized world. It is in this context that East West University’s English Department wishes to open up a discussion on the nature and function of today’s imperialism and invite papers on topics dealing with cultural, political, economic, linguistic, racial, gender, communal, ideological, religious, academic, creative and pedagogic analyses of empire/ resistance to empire. The objective, thus, is to explore issues that may lead towards praxis (of an anti-imperialist pedagogy/politics).
